The Election Commission (EC) has officially declared the commencement of the application process for individuals aspiring to contest in the forthcoming parliamentary elections, according to a statement made by EC’s Vice-President, Ismail Habeeb, earlier today.

Starting from January 30, prospective candidates keen on participating in the parliamentary elections can submit their candidacy papers until February 14, marking a crucial period for those seeking political office in the Maldives.

The decision to hold the parliamentary elections on March 17, coinciding with the first week of Ramadan, was confirmed by the EC, setting the stage for a significant democratic exercise in the island nation. A considerable electorate of 284,327 individuals is deemed eligible to cast their votes in this pivotal electoral process.

The present 19th Parliament comprises 87 members, but the upcoming elections will see an expansion to 93 members for the subsequent parliamentary term. This alteration is anticipated to have a notable impact on the country’s legislative dynamics.

Political parties have already initiated the process of selecting their candidates through party primaries, further intensifying the political landscape as they prepare for the upcoming electoral contest. The anticipation is palpable as the nation gears up for a period of political engagement and democratic deliberation.

The EC’s announcement signals the commencement of a crucial phase in the democratic calendar of the Maldives, with citizens and aspiring leaders alike preparing to actively participate in shaping the future trajectory of the nation’s parliamentary representation.
