Velana International Airport (VIA) has achieved an unprecedented milestone with a record-breaking number of flight movements on January 6, as reported by the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), the entity responsible for operating VIA.

On that day, a staggering total of 925 air traffic movements were recorded, showcasing the airport’s increased operational activity. This notable figure includes 672 seaplane movements, 104 international flight movements, 116 domestic movements, and 33 private jet movements. The surge in seaplane movements highlights the popularity of this unique mode of transportation in the Maldives, known for its picturesque atolls and water-based resorts.

The record-setting day surpassed the previous highest number of movements, which stood at 861. The substantial increase in flight activity is indicative of the dynamic nature of air travel in the Maldives, reflecting the growing appeal of the destination.

Notably, the heightened air traffic aligns with the robust influx of tourists to the Maldives in the early days of the new year. More than 50,000 tourists have arrived in the Maldives thus far in 2024, underlining the nation’s enduring allure as a sought-after travel destination. This influx is a testament to the Maldives’ resilience and its ability to attract visitors even amid global uncertainties, reinforcing its position as a premier travel destination in the Indian Ocean region.

As Velana International Airport continues to witness record-setting flight movements, the tourism industry in the Maldives remains a vibrant and essential component of the nation’s economic landscape. The surge in arrivals and the corresponding spike in airport activity bode well for the Maldives’ tourism sector, signaling a promising start to the year.
