Kunming, China — Addressing the opening ceremony of the 8th China-South Asia Expo, Hon. Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim of the People’s Majlis emphasized the historical and contemporary ties between the Maldives and China, while advocating for solidarity and coordination among participating nations.

Hon. Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim extended his heartfelt thanks to the Chinese government and the organizers of the expo for their warm hospitality. “I am deeply grateful to our hosts for their exceptional welcome and the meticulous arrangements made for my delegation and me,” he said.

Nazim appreciated the efforts put into making their visit comfortable and productive, highlighting the strong spirit of cooperation that characterized their stay in Kunming.

Reflecting on Marco Polo’s accounts of Kunming, Hon. Deputy Speaker Nazim described the city’s historical significance in trade and commerce, drawing a connection between the past and the vibrant present-day city.

“Marco Polo noted Kunming’s bustling commerce, and today, we see the same lively atmosphere and skilled craftsmanship,” he remarked.

Highlighting the deep-rooted diplomatic relationship between the Maldives and China, which has thrived for over five decades, Hon. Deputy Speaker Nazim pointed to the Sinamale’ Bridge as a symbol of this successful partnership.

“The Sinamale Bridge stands as a testament to our collaboration, significantly enhancing transportation and economic activity,” he said.

The theme of this year’s expo, “Solidarity and Coordination for Common Development,” was a focal point in Hon. Deputy Speaker Nazim’s address. He underscored the importance of the expo as a platform for fostering multilateral diplomacy, economic cooperation, and cultural exchange among South Asian countries and China.

Addressing global challenges, Hon. Deputy Speaker Nazim called for a united response to climate change and economic inequality. He highlighted the Maldives’ vulnerability to rising sea levels and extreme weather events, urging collective efforts to develop comprehensive and equitable solutions.

“By sharing knowledge, technology, and best practices, we can ensure that development is inclusive and leaves no one behind,” he emphasized.

Hon. Deputy Speaker Nazim also discussed the critical role of Chinese tourists in the Maldivian economy, underscoring the importance of continued cooperation in the tourism sector amidst current economic challenges.

“Chinese tourists constitute a significant portion of our tourism market, and China remains one of our largest sources of visitors,” he added.

This year’s expo features 15 pavilions showcasing innovations in architectural science, manufacturing, green energy, healthcare, culture, and tourism. Hon. Deputy Speaker Nazim praised the expo’s role in fostering understanding and collaboration, not only in business and trade but also in technological, educational, and cultural exchanges. He highlighted the importance of such gatherings in promoting international peace and dialogue.

“I am confident that this Expo will not only strengthen our existing partnerships but also open new avenues for cooperation and development,” Hon. Deputy Speaker Nazim concluded, expressing hope for a prosperous and harmonious future for all participating nations.

The 8th China-South Asia Expo runs from July 21 to July 24, bringing together leaders and innovators from across the region to engage in meaningful discussions and showcase advancements that promise to shape the future of South Asian and Chinese cooperation.
