MALÉ — Building a happy, cohesive society rooted in deep patriotic love remains a cornerstone of government policy, Minister of Education Dr Ismail Shafeeu said on Monday.
Speaking as the chief guest at an awards ceremony for an art and photography competition organised by the Ministry of Heritage and the National Centre for the Arts (NCA) to mark Independence Day, Dr Shafeeu underscored the role creative platforms play in shaping young minds.
Such competitions serve as vital channels to nurture national spirit among students and to honour the heroes who fought to secure the Maldives’ sovereignty, the minister noted. He added that the artwork and photographs submitted by participants reflected the rising generation’s deep-seated affection for the nation and its history.
Highlighting the emphasis placed on national identity by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s administration, Dr Shafeeu said significant strides had already been made in a short span. The government, he noted, continues to focus on recognizing national figures and reinforcing social cohesion.
Dr Shafeeu urged students to draw inspiration from the sacrifices made by their ancestors to preserve the country’s freedom. Upholding the independence and dignity of the Maldives — and handing it over faithfully to future generations — remains the personal responsibility of every student, he stressed.
Closing his address, the minister cautioned against modern tendencies to disparage historical national heroes. Schools and parents must take the initiative to teach students authentic history, he urged, ensuring the legacy of those who strived for the nation is kept alive and respected.
