The People’s National Congress has formally endorsed President Dr Mohamed Muizzu as its candidate for the 2028 presidential election, with delegates at the party’s three-day senate session unanimously backing a resolution calling on him to contest a second term.
The endorsement, passed by representatives of the party, came at what the PNC described as a historic senate session. If President Muizzu wins in 2028, he would become the first president in Maldivian history to serve two consecutive terms under the current constitution, which came into force in 2008 and introduced the multiparty democratic system that limits presidents to two terms.
The resolution cited a list of achievements the party attributed to the first half of Muizzu’s term, including the repayment of the sovereign Sukuk bond, the expulsion of foreign military personnel, the expansion of the MNDF’s capabilities through drone acquisition and the establishment of an Air Corps, the launch of the Ras Male’ reclamation project, the introduction of PayPal and other digital financial services, the Aasandha reform, the nationalisation moves on Dhiraagu and MWSC, and the government’s stance on Palestine in international forums.
Delegates who spoke during the session said their support for a second term was based on results delivered in a short period rather than party loyalty alone.
The resolution described Muizzu’s foreign policy as one that puts the Maldives first, his economic management as responsible stewardship of inherited debt, and his social policies as having improved public safety and reduced crime.
The party said the 2028 campaign team will be formally constituted following the senate session.
