Seeking to solidify geopolitical alignment through shared historical narrative, the Maldives and China have agreed to exchange a series of major cultural exhibitions celebrating centuries of seafaring heritage along the ancient Maritime Silk Road.
The initiative follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts and the National Maritime Museum of China in Tianjin. Signed by the Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage, Heena Waleed, and Wang Long, the director of the Tianjin museum, the agreement marks the first time Maldivian heritage authorities will mount an international museum exhibition abroad.
Under the framework, the National Maritime Museum in Tianjin will bring a curated exhibition to the National Museum of the Maldives in Malé early next year. In return, a travelling exposition displaying Maldivian cultural artifacts and nautical history will tour prominent museums across several Chinese cities.
Speaking to the state broadcaster Public Service Media, Heena Waleed emphasized that the upcoming joint exhibitions aim to highlight the evolution of Indian Ocean navigation, focusing specifically on the historical maritime trade routes that connected the Maldives to imperial China since antiquity.
Beyond the public gallery exchanges, the pact establishes a broad bilateral framework for heritage preservation, joint archaeological research, and technical capacity-building. Under the agreement, teams from both nations will conduct extensive surveys and site mapping across historical monuments and artifacts scattered throughout the Maldivian archipelago.
China will also provide specialized training, professional development, and technical assistance for Maldivian curators and heritage personnel, helping the Maldives deploy advanced conservation strategies to preserve vulnerable cultural assets.
The cultural partnership comes as Malé continues to expand its diplomatic and economic cooperation with Beijing, leveraging shared history to reinforce contemporary bilateral ties.
