The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has officially scheduled elections for its governing body, the National Council, for November 27.
The announcement was made by party Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed during the closing ceremony of the “MDP Congress 2026”. Nasheed highlighted that this election will mark the first since the party introduced major changes to its administrative structure and enacted the fourth amendment to its constitution.
The most prominent reform passed at the congress was the complete abolition of the party’s President and Vice President positions within the National Council. Instead, the newly restructured National Council will be formed to ensure broader representation across various constituencies, sectors, and internal branches.
Under the newly adopted basic regulations, the National Council will comprise the Chairperson, Deputy Chairpersons, and elected representatives from individual constituencies. The council will also include the President and five elected members of the Women’s Wing, as well as the President and five elected members of the Youth Wing.
Additionally, seats on the governing body have been allocated to the President and three Vice Presidents of the Councilors’ Assembly, the President and three members of the Women’s Development Committee (WDC) Wing, and all sitting members of the MDP Parliamentary Group. During periods when the party holds government, the President of the Republic, the Vice President, MDP cabinet ministers, and city mayors will also automatically retain National Council seats.
