In a significant stride towards Thilafushi’s transformation, the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) and China Harbor Engineering Company Limited collaborate on the second phase of the Thilafushi land reclamation project. This endeavor, known as “Area E,” encompasses key developments poised to shape Thilafushi into a bustling industrial hub for the Male’ area.

Dredging Progress and Ambitious Targets

Under the second phase, the HDC reveals that the dredging of Area E is set to conclude within an expedited timeline of 25 days. This phase focuses on dredging a substantial 5.9 hectares, contributing to the ongoing effort to expand Thilafushi’s landmass.

With a vision to establish Thilafushi as a commercial hub, the project’s groundwork commenced in March of the preceding year.

Phased Development and Future Plans

Dredging operations unfold in phases, with 39.6 hectares already completed in Area B. Simultaneously, Area A is undergoing dredging, targeting completion by February of the upcoming year, covering a sprawling 71.5 hectares. The HDC ambitiously plans to dredge a total of 150 hectares under the master plan, earmarking this newly excavated land primarily for business purposes.

As part of the broader project, HDC delineates a meticulous plan to develop six distinct areas within the newly dredged expanses. While one area is reserved for industrial activities, a significant portion will house a liquefied natural gas plant. Additional spaces are designated for light industrial work, mixed-use offices, and small businesses.

Historical Context and Vision for Thilafushi’s Future

Thilafushi’s origins as a lagoon named “Thilafalhu” date back to the early 1990s when discussions arose to address Malé’s waste management challenges. The decision to reclaim Thilafalhu as a landfill materialized on December 5, 1991. Presently, Thilafushi has burgeoned into a substantial landmass exceeding 4.6 million square feet (0.43 km²).

The HDC underscores its commitment to expeditious development, emphasizing adherence to schedules for the benefit of the community. Thilafushi’s ambitious transformation aligns with the overarching goal of alleviating challenges faced by industrialists, fostering business opportunities, and ultimately enhancing the quality and affordability of goods and services for the people.
