In the bustling busy life and laidback Maldivian style, where the ebb and flow of relationships shape the intricate tapestry of society, the dynamics of marriage and divorce have become a shared pastime—a narrative unfolding through the highs of unions and the complexities of separations. Delving into the statistical chronicle of Family Court, the numbers tell a story of commitment, conflicts, and the delicate balance between love and detachment.

Last year witnessed a total of 2,425 marriages and 1,281 divorces, painting a portrait of the country’s relational landscape. Unraveling the temporal nuances, December emerged as the month of unions, hosting 306 marriages—an abundance of vows exchanged, echoing in the Maldivian salty air. In contrast, October took the spotlight in the dissolution of bonds, with 139 divorces marking a season of transitions.

Beyond the borders, love knew no geographical boundaries, as 163 marriages found their culmination abroad. Concurrently, the court issued 167 orders, ranging from protection against domestic violence to safeguarding children’s rights—an acknowledgment of the myriad facets encompassed within the realm of familial relationships.

Within the court’s chambers, the Family Section became the arena for 270 submitted cases, of which 107 found resolution through amicable “sulha” agreements. Financial complexities intertwined with emotional narratives, as the court ordered MVR 95.5 million for maintenance of wives’ and children’s expenses.
