MALÉ, Maldives — In a compelling address at the Parliament Induction Program organized by the Westminster Foundation, Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim emphasized the critical need for reform and accountability within the 20th Majlis.
Welcoming the influx of new parliamentary members following the recent election, Deputy Speaker Nazim heralded a fresh wave of perspectives and responsibilities. He underscored the immense mandate entrusted to the new MPs by the people, urging them to deliver on their promises with a profound sense of duty.
Reflecting on the Maldives’ constitutional journey since 2008, Deputy Speaker Nazim posed critical questions about the effectiveness and costs of democratic initiatives. “Should democracy be this costly? Is the price we are paying for these initiatives justifiable when considering their impact and effectiveness?” he asked, highlighting the need for a nuanced approach to legislative reform. He stressed the importance of adapting policies to local contexts and ensuring fiscal responsibility.
“We must rethink, tweak, reform, and revisit our approach to governance,” Deputy Speaker Nazim urged, prompting MPs to prioritize efficiency and effectiveness in their legislative endeavors.
Addressing transparency and accountability, Deputy Speaker Nazim advocated for strengthened committee oversight and enhanced public engagement mechanisms. “We must maintain transparency and accountability in governance,” he stated, emphasizing the role of MPs in promoting citizen participation through informed decision-making and robust civic dialogue.
“Our responsibilities are manifold and critical. We must work towards strengthening democracy and ensuring the separation of powers to prevent the abuse of authority,” Deputy Speaker Nazim asserted, highlighting the fundamental principles of democratic governance.
He also called for evidence-based policymaking to address national challenges. “We must engage in evidence-based policymaking to address the pressing challenges of our nation,” he emphasized, advocating for informed and effective legislative action.
Quoting the UK Prime Minister, Deputy Speaker Nazim reminded his colleagues of the imperative to bridge the gap between political service and public expectations. “When the gap between the sacrifices made by people and the service they receive from politicians grows this big, it leads to weariness in the heart of a nation,” he stated, calling for action-driven governance.
Deputy Speaker Nazim concluded his address with a call for unified action across party lines to uphold democratic values and achieve national goals, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “Together, let us continue to strive for a Majlis that is not only more effective and efficient but also one that genuinely represents the voices and aspirations of our citizens,” he affirmed, committing to effective governance and public service.
