In a sweeping crackdown on illegal immigration and criminal activities, the country’s law enforcement authorities have handed over 173 foreigners to immigration authorities for deportation, according to a statement by Acting Head of Crime Investigation Command, Chief Superintendent of Police Ahmed Nafiz.
Chief Superintendent Nafiz, addressing a news conference, disclosed that a total of 13 operations were carried out to identify and apprehend illegal immigrants. The operations also aimed to address concerns related to local involvement in prostitution facilitated by some foreigners, showcasing a collaborative effort between the police force and immigration officials.
The joint operations, encompassing both police and immigration efforts, resulted in the arrest of 173 individuals who were subsequently handed over to immigration authorities for deportation. This marks a significant step in the government’s ongoing efforts to curb illegal immigration in the country, which has over 100 thousand foreigners, many of whom are believed to be residing in the nation illegally.
Beyond the focus on immigration, law enforcement agencies have intensified efforts to combat drug related crimes. From late last year until the early part of this year, the police have conducted 29 operations to inspect 51 safaris, popular tourist vessels. During these operations, 3,097 individuals were stopped for suspected involvement in drug related crimes. Notably, 135 locals and 16 foreigners were apprehended during these operations.
The police estimate the seized drugs and liquor to be valued at 800 thousand Maldivian Rufiyaa, highlighting the significant financial impact of these illicit activities.
