In a significant move, the government has announced its decision to conduct a thorough study aimed at compiling a national register that includes data on people with disabilities and the elderly. This pivotal decision was reached during today’s cabinet meeting.
Addressing the media at a news conference held at the Presidential Office, Principal Secretary to the President on Public Policy, Abdullah Nazim Ibrahim, emphasized the government’s commitment to recognizing and addressing the needs of the elderly and people with disabilities. He stated that these segments of the population play a vital role in the country’s development and deserve special attention.
The study will be carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works, along with the Ministry of Social and Family Development. Nazim explained that the government aims to gather comprehensive information in order to better understand the challenges faced by the elderly and people with disabilities.
To ensure the effective execution of these studies, a technical team comprising relevant agencies will be formed. The studies will primarily focus on populations smaller than 1,000 people, with the invaluable assistance of island councils. For larger population areas, the government intends to seek volunteer support to conduct the studies.
“In light of the information collected in this survey, a framework will be established to identify the elderly, especially those with disabilities who are not included in the mainstream,” stated Abdullah Nazim Ibrahim. He further emphasized that the Ministry of Social and Family Development will play a key role in shaping this framework.
Additionally, plans include the implementation of a centralized database that consolidates data on people with disabilities and the elderly into one platform. This collaborative effort will be led by the Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Social and Family Development.
The government’s initiative reflects a commitment to inclusivity and ensuring that the needs of vulnerable populations are recognized and addressed in national policy frameworks. This comprehensive study marks a significant step towards creating a more accessible and supportive environment for the elderly and people with disabilities.
