COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — The Maldives has delivered a shipment of emergency aid to Sri Lanka to support communities devastated by Cyclone Dithuwa, underscoring the bonds of regional solidarity.

Maldives’ High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Masood Imad, formally handed over 25,000 cans of tuna to Sri Lankan officials. The consignment, transported aboard the Galena, a cargo vessel operated by Maldives State Shipping, arrived in Colombo in 14 containers.

The handover ceremony brought together senior Sri Lankan officials, including Brigadier Roshan Dharmawickrama, Director of Operations at the Disaster Management Centre; Arna Wijewardena, Deputy Commander of the Western Naval Area; and Diana Perara, Deputy Director at the Foreign Ministry.

Earlier, High Commissioner Imad also presented a cash donation of $50,000 to the Sri Lankan government. Foreign Minister Vijitha Heratha received the contribution on behalf of Colombo.

The relief effort comes amid a broader mobilization of resources. A government-led telethon, organized in partnership with local media, raised MVR 12.3 million to bolster recovery efforts. Maldivian businesses and private companies have also pledged financial support, reflecting a nationwide drive to assist those affected by the cyclone.

In Malé, Sri Lankans gathered on Boduthakurufaanu Magu to express their gratitude to Maldivians who stepped forward when their country needed help most.

Cyclone Dithuwa, which struck Sri Lanka, left widespread damage across coastal districts, displacing thousands and straining relief operations. The Maldivian contribution highlights the growing role of regional neighbours in disaster response, reinforcing ties between the two Indian Ocean nations at a moment of acute humanitarian need.
