In a landmark development for the Maldives tourism sector, Hong Kong Airlines has officially launched charter scheduled flights to the tropical archipelago, reinstating its vital air link. The inaugural flight gracefully touched down at Velana International Airport at 19:15 today, marking a pivotal milestone in the airline’s renewed commitment to the Maldivian market.
Fathmath Thaufeeq, CEO and Managing Director of the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “We extend a warm welcome to Hong Kong Airlines for resuming operations in the Maldives. This signals not only the resilience of our tourism sector but also the enduring appeal of our destination. We look forward to a fruitful partnership that enhances connectivity and promotes the unique charm of the Maldives.”
The airline is set to operate three weekly flights, strategically scheduled on Friday, Saturday, and Wednesday, addressing the escalating demand for travel to this idyllic paradise in the Indian Ocean. Hong Kong Airlines boasts a legacy of service to the Maldives, having operated charter flights since 2011. The hiatus in 2018 due to the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic emphasizes the significance of its revival, showcasing the airline’s confidence in the Maldives’ tourism recovery.
The Maldives, renowned for its pristine beaches and vibrant marine life, has witnessed a remarkable surge in tourism. Over 40 airlines currently operate flights to the archipelago, affirming its enduring appeal among global travelers.
Highlighting this positive momentum, Fathmath Thaufeeq further remarked, “The Maldives continues to captivate travelers with its unparalleled beauty. The Ministry of Tourism is pleased to report a significant milestone, with the arrival of over 100,000 tourists by January 17th, signifying a robust recovery in the sector. A noteworthy 9.5 percent increase in tourist arrivals compared to the last two years underscores the global confidence in the Maldives as a premier travel destination.”
Russian tourists lead the influx, with 12,373 arrivals, closely followed by Italy with 11,404 visitors. The United Kingdom secured the third position with 8,261 visitors, while India emerged as the fourth-largest contributor, welcoming 8,110 tourists.
The resurgence of Hong Kong Airlines’ flights not only enhances the archipelago’s connectivity but also symbolizes renewed confidence in international travel, highlighting the enduring allure of the Maldives as a tropical haven for global tourists.
