NEW DELHI — After years of lingering skepticism toward the government, a new nationwide survey has revealed a striking rise in public trust among Indian citizens, reflecting improving conditions across sectors like healthcare, infrastructure and digital access.
The survey, conducted by five elite Indian Institutes of Management, found that the average level of trust in the national government has reached 69.36 percent, with the highest levels recorded in the states of Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh, both ruled by BJP.
Spanning 22 states and 85,326 respondents from all walks of life — farmers, casual workers, housewives, service employees and students — the comprehensive study paints a picture of widespread progress felt by many Indians over the past five years.
One of the most significant improvements cited was a 72 percent reduction in electricity cuts nationwide since 2019. Major infrastructure upgrades were also noted in water and electricity supply across states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh.
The agricultural sector saw income gains of nearly 40 percent on average, according to self-reported data, with states like Kerala, Haryana and Punjab recording the highest increases of up to 49 percent.
For women, the benefits were multifold — better sanitation reduced sick days by 18 percent annually, while increased access to cooking gas and healthcare contributed to higher savings, averaging ₹12,096 ($147) more per year.
The survey found a remarkable 66 percent of respondents felt the nation’s youth had become more hopeful and optimistic about India’s development and growth over this period. Gujarat and Maharashtra led in fostering such optimism while curbing drug use among young people.
Casual workers, often susceptible to job insecurity, reported a 60 percent rise in income amid improvements in the labor market — a figure corroborated by data from 75 trucking companies.
As the world’s largest democracy pushed its Digital India initiative, 69.1 percent saw enhancements in information technology and public service delivery through advanced digital tools.
Transportation networks also made strides, with around 70 percent of those surveyed noting upgrades in road, rail and air travel infrastructure over the past five years.
While regional disparities persist, the findings signal a notable upswing in overall public sentiment toward the central government’s performance across diverse policy spheres.
As India’s economic and geopolitical footprint grows, this renewal of citizen trust could buoy the government’s domestic standing and give it more bandwidth to tackle lingering challenges on the national stage.
