During the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), H.E. Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef lauded South Africa’s bold move in initiating legal action against Israel for genocide in Gaza. In a powerful statement, the Vice President commended South Africa’s recent application before the International Court of Justice, seeking a declaration that Israel is in breach of the Genocide Convention.

Vice President Latheef emphasized the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, where the humanitarian crisis has led to the tragic loss of thousands of innocent lives. He reiterated the call for a lasting solution that establishes a sovereign and independent State of Palestine based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Highlighting the broader challenges facing humanity, Vice President Latheef stated that the world is at a crossroads. While acknowledging human progress and prosperity, he noted that it is also marked by conflict, calamity, uncertainty, friction, and fear.

Emphasizing the impact of climate change on developing countries with resource limitations, Vice President Latheef urged NAM to deepen cooperation and counter new and emerging threats. He reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to international cooperation, with unity in diversity as a fundamental strength.

The Vice President underscored the imperative to revitalize and reform the United Nations and its Security Council. He emphasized the crucial role of the Non-Aligned Movement in ensuring a peaceful, stable, and prosperous future for all. Calling for NAM to adapt to evolving global dynamics, he envisioned a world where hope triumphs over fear, peace over conflict, and resilience over vulnerability.
