Malé, Maldives — The Maldives marked the sixth anniversary of the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge today, celebrating a structure that has become a symbol of partnership between the two nations since its inauguration on August 30, 2018. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and Chinese Ambassador Wang Lixin highlighted the bridge’s impact on connectivity, development, and the enduring relationship between the Maldives and China.
“Today, we proudly celebrate the sixth anniversary of the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge,” President Muizzu said in a tweet, emphasizing the bridge’s role in connecting the islands and symbolizing the mutual trust between the two countries. “The bridge continues to be a testament to our shared vision of progress, unity, and prosperity,” he added, underscoring its importance as a beacon of cooperation.
Ambassador Wang echoed these sentiments in a tweet of her own, reflecting on the transformative effects the bridge has had on the Maldives. “Over the past six years, the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge has greatly promoted the social and economic development of the Maldives and brought transformative changes to its people’s lives,” she noted. Wang attributed these achievements to the Belt and Road Initiative and the spirit of friendly cooperation between China and the Maldives.
The China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, a 2.1-kilometer structure linking the capital, Malé, with the island of Hulhulé, home to Velana International Airport, has played a crucial role in enhancing connectivity and facilitating the movement of people and goods between Malé and the manmade island of Hulhumalé, a bustling satellite city. Since its opening, it has not only eased transportation challenges but also boosted economic activity and tourism, becoming a lifeline for both residents and visitors.
Constructed with financial and technical support from China, the bridge is a prominent example of the infrastructure projects under China’s Belt and Road Initiative. President Muizzu expressed optimism for the future of China-Maldives relations, with Ambassador Wang looking forward to more fruitful collaboration.
