Maldives Greets Its Millionth Tourist, Eyes Record Year

The Maldives welcomed its one millionth visitor of the year on Thursday, a milestone that has officials setting their sights on an ambitious target: two million tourists in 2024.

A Thai family, returning to the island nation for their fourth visit, got more than they bargained for at Velana International Airport. Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal was on hand to greet them, along with a small welcoming committee.

“This milestone wouldn’t be possible without your dedication and passion,” the Ministry of Tourism posted on Twitter. “Here’s to a bright future for Maldives tourism!”

President Mohamed Muizzu has made the two million visitor goal a cornerstone of his administration’s tourism strategy. It’s a tall order for a country of just over half a million people spread across roughly 1,200 islands.

Tourism officials are betting on the Maldives’ reputation as a bucket-list destination to fuel growth. They’re particularly encouraged by the return of Chinese tourists, a key market that’s rebounding after a pandemic-induced lull.
