Malé, Maldives – In a move to strengthen its international ties, the Maldivian government has announced plans to open an embassy in Italy, according to President Dr. Mohammed Muizzu.
The announcement was made by President Muizzu during his address to the nation on the occasion of Republic Day at Darbaruge yesterday. He stated that the Maldivian government has received permission to establish an embassy in Italy, a significant step in the country’s diplomatic efforts.
The President also mentioned that the government is looking to open embassies and high commissions in other countries that are important for the Maldives in terms of tourism and trade. However, he did not specifically mention Russia, which is a major source of tourists for the island nation, amid the country’s frosty political relations with the Kremlin.
Since taking office, President Muizzu has been actively working to strengthen the Maldives’ ties with other countries. During his tenure, the country has already opened an embassy in Turkey, a nation that supplies around 1,400 tourists to the Maldives, less than Israel.
The Maldives has also recently signed a free trade agreement with Turkey, further expanding its economic partnerships.
The decision to open an embassy in Italy is seen as a strategic move by the Maldivian government to enhance its diplomatic presence and economic cooperation with the European nation, which is an important tourist market for the archipelago.
