Male’ City Mayor Adam Azim has reported that the City Council staff disposed of a staggering 42.5 tons of waste from Male’ in a single day. This comes as part of a massive cleanup effort initiated in response to the accumulation of rubbish on the streets following Ramadan cleanup of the dwellings.

Residents of the capital city had collectively cleaned their households for the holy month of Ramadan, resulting in heaps of waste littering almost every street corner. Among the discarded items were old furniture, toilet seats, and construction debris.

Mayor Azim disclosed that over the past 18 days, his staff has removed a total of 305.6 tons of waste, equivalent to 25 ft-sized 12.22 containers. He urged residents to refrain from dumping waste on the streets and emphasized the importance of collective effort in maintaining a clean and pleasant living environment.

The City Council has mobilized its personnel across the city to tackle the waste issue, with cleanup operations conducted in various areas including Janavaree Magu in Henveriu ward and numerous congested alleys of Male’. Furthermore, the Council has taken punitive action against individuals found guilty of littering, having fined 100 offenders for violating waste disposal regulations.

In collaboration with law enforcement, the police have intensified efforts to address the problem of street garbage dumping. They stress the necessity of cooperation from all residents to uphold cleanliness standards and mitigate the risk of disease spread associated with improper waste disposal. Police authorities have affirmed their commitment to advising and penalizing those found dumping garbage on the streets, even resorting to making perpetrators clean up their own mess when identified.

The ongoing cleanup campaign underscores the city’s commitment to maintaining cleanliness and hygiene standards, particularly in the aftermath of communal activities such as Ramadan preparations. Mayor Azim and law enforcement authorities emphasize the importance of individual responsibility and collective action in ensuring Male’ remains a clean and habitable city for all its residents.
