The Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has opened the opportunity for interested parties to submit Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for the detailed design of the Thilafushi Port terminal and its associated facilities. EOIs will be accepted until the 25th of this month.
According to MPL, the detailed design package covers all major components required for the first phase of the new commercial port. The company is seeking drawings and technical specifications for:
- Main terminal building
- Container yard and storage areas
- Administrative office building
- Control tower
- Gate complex
- Workshop and maintenance facilities
- Staff support facilities
The Thilafushi Port is planned as the country’s new central commercial harbour, intended to replace the congested Malé Commercial Port and expand national cargo‑handling capacity. Once completed, the facility is expected to streamline logistics, accommodate larger vessels, and shift heavy port operations away from the capital.
Some components of Phase One were awarded last month to China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), marking the start of preparatory works and early-stage construction activities.
In his presidential address to Parliament earlier this year, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu reiterated that the new port is expected to become operational by November next year. He described the project as essential for strengthening the country’s economic resilience and modernising its maritime trade network.
The government has said the Thilafushi Port will serve as a long‑term solution to the limitations of the existing Malé Commercial Harbour, which currently operates under severe space constraints and rising cargo demand.
