MALE’, Maldives — President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu officially inaugurated the renovated Center for Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) building last night, marking the school’s return to the capital after a period of relocation to Hulhumale’. Though CHSE resumed classes in the renovated premises last September, the ceremony formalized the school’s reopening, which many see as a response to longstanding concerns from students and parents about the commute between Male’ and Hulhumale’.
During the event, Education Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu presented a commemorative plaque to President Muizzu, a former CHSE student himself. The president attended CHSE from 1995 to 1997, when it was known as the Science Education Center. He was recognized as one of the institution’s top achievers and was present in July this year as a notable alumnus during CHSE’s 45th anniversary celebration.
CHSE, initially founded in 1979 with just 47 students under President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s administration, has been the key institution for many of the nation’s current officials. Over the years, it evolved into a central institution for A-level studies, particularly when it became CHSE in 2001. The relocation to Hulhumale’ in recent years prompted concerns from families about accessibility, leading the Education Ministry to return the school to Male’.
The school’s principal, Abdulla Didi, commended President Muizzu for addressing the community’s concerns. Today, CHSE serves more than 400 students, continuing its legacy as a premier institution for higher secondary education in the Maldives.
