Russia Appoints First Consul General to the Maldives

Male, Maldives –  Aleksei M. Idamkin, the newly appointed Consul General of the Russian Federation to the Maldives, officially presented his Consular Commission Letter to Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel this morning, marking a significant diplomatic development for both nations.

The ceremony, which took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, saw Minister Dr. Khaleel extend his congratulations to Mr. Idamkin, expressing optimism for the future of Russian-Maldivian relations. The Minister highlighted the historical nature of the appointment, noting that Russia is the first country to send a Consul General to the Maldives.

Minister Dr. Khaleel underscored the growing importance of Russia in the Maldivian context, particularly as the second-largest source of tourists to the island nation. He noted that the establishment of a consular post will enhance services for Russian nationals visiting, residing, or investing in the Maldives, further solidifying bilateral ties.

In response, Consul General Idamkin thanked Minister Khaleel for the warm welcome and reiterated his commitment to improving consular services for Russians in the Maldives. He also emphasized his intent to promote stronger economic partnerships between the two nations, building on existing ties.

The event was attended by several key officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including Secretary Bilateral Dr. Hala Hameed, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr. Mariyam Zulfa, among others.
