MALE, Maldives — STELCO, the state electric company, is taking significant steps toward a sustainable future by preparing to launch electric vehicle (EV) car charging stations and EV motorcycle charging systems in Malé City. This initiative, reflecting the government’s commitment to transitioning to cleaner energy, aims to accelerate the nation’s shift toward greener transportation solutions.
STELCO is not only supporting the growing adoption of electric vehicles but also reinforcing the country’s commitment to environmental sustainability and innovation.
The move comes as the number of electric vehicles, including around five Tesla cars, steadily rises in the Maldives. Although still rare, electric vehicles are becoming a more common sight, signaling a shift toward more eco-friendly transportation options.
In contrast to importing a used vehicle in good condition, bringing in an electric vehicle is emerging as a better alternative, aligning with the global trend of reducing carbon footprints.
STELCO’s strategy draws inspiration from South Korea, which holds the record for the highest number of public charging stations per vehicle. The company plans to replicate this model by installing one charging station for every three cars, ensuring convenient access to charging infrastructure and promoting the broader adoption of electric vehicles.
