New York, 20 September 2024 – Heads of State and Government from around the world gathered at United Nations Headquarters to adopt the “Pact for the Future,” a comprehensive framework aimed at addressing urgent global challenges and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come. The draft resolution, introduced by the President of the General Assembly, emphasizes the need for international cooperation in tackling interconnected crises, including climate change, poverty, and inequality.

The Pact recognizes that humanity is at a critical juncture, facing existential risks while also being presented with unprecedented opportunities for renewal through advancements in knowledge, science, and technology. The leaders expressed their commitment to fostering a world that is safe, just, equal, sustainable, and prosperous for all. “Through the actions we take today, we resolve to set ourselves on that path,” the resolution states.

Key commitments outlined in the Pact include accelerating efforts to meet obligations under the Paris Agreement, enhancing accountability in international law to prevent conflicts, and reaffirming the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as central to global governance. Additionally, the document emphasizes the importance of eradicating poverty in all its forms, with a focus on vulnerable populations.

As part of the Pact, leaders committed to a series of actions aimed at addressing climate change, promoting gender equality, and ensuring access to essential services such as education and healthcare. The declaration also includes a “Global Digital Compact,” which aims to bridge digital divides and promote equitable access to technology.

The initiative has been praised as a significant step towards a more collaborative international community, with calls for strong and sustained partnerships across all sectors. The leaders are set to review progress on these commitments during the upcoming sessions of the United Nations, reinforcing a unified approach to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

As the world faces growing challenges, the adoption of the “Pact for the Future” marks a pivotal moment in global diplomacy, with leaders committed to safeguarding the planet and its inhabitants for future generations.
