BANGALORE, India — President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, in the final leg of his state visit to India, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to a transparent and principled foreign policy, distancing his government from the approach of his predecessors. Speaking at a gathering in Bangalore on Wednesday evening, he emphasized that the Maldives would adhere to the foreign policy his government outlined during the campaign, underscoring transparency as a key pillar of his leadership.

“We announced our foreign policy from the first day of the campaign, and we will follow it,” President Muizzu stated at the event, which took place at the Taj West End on Racecourse Road. “What’s written is what we follow. We are transparent,” he added, addressing concerns that his administration might mirror the actions of the previous government.

The event, attended by over 150 Maldivians residing in Bangalore, provided an opportunity for the president to underscore the importance of maintaining strong relations with India, a critical regional partner. “India has often been the first responder in times of need, and in some cases, the only responder,” President Muizzu noted. “For the sake of peace and tranquility in the neighborhood, we must maintain a good relationship with India.”

Bangalore, a favored destination for Maldivians seeking medical treatment and education, was the president’s final stop after a visit to New Delhi and Mumbai earlier in the week. The Maldives, President Muizzu affirmed, will continue to foster strong relationships with all nations that support its development goals. However, he stressed the significance of preserving the country’s national identity.

“Our vision document is clear, and we encourage everyone to review it,” he said, adding that the administration’s focus remains on the Maldives’ nationality, the national language Dhivehi, and the Islamic faith. “We will not allow anything to overshadow these three pillars.”

President Muizzu is scheduled to return to the Maldives on Thursday, concluding his first state visit to India as head of state.
