Three Former Ministers Appointed as Ambassadors at Large

Three former ministers have been appointed as Ambassadors at Large, the President’s Office confirmed on Sunday. Adam Sharif Umar, Thorig Ibrahim and Fatimath Diyana Saeed received their appointments on separate days last week.

Adam Sharif Umar previously served as Minister of Cities and Administrative Areas. Thorig Ibrahim was the Minister of Tourism. Both resigned on 14 April as part of the wider cabinet reshuffle that followed the local council election defeat, a shake‑up that saw ten ministers step down as the government moved to reform the administration in line with public expectations.

The third appointment is Fatimath Diyana Saeed, a former Attorney General who served under President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik. She was also the first Maldivian woman to serve as Secretary General of SAARC.

Ambassadors at Large are tasked with representing the Maldives on specific thematic portfolios or high‑level diplomatic assignments, supporting the country’s external engagement across multiple regions.
