Prosecutor General’s Office Filed 263 Charges and Attended 1,150 Court Hearings in May

MALE’ — The Prosecutor General’s Office filed 263 criminal charges in May 2026 and attended 1,150 court hearings during the month, according to figures released by the office.

Prosecutors received 143 new cases for review during the same period and provided legal guidance to investigative authorities on 447 occasions.

The 1,150 court appearances represent a significant drop from April, when prosecutors attended 2,710 hearings. The office did not provide an explanation for the decline.

The Prosecutor General’s Office is responsible for all state-led criminal prosecutions in the Maldives and oversees the legal conduct of investigations across agencies.
