MALE’ — The Supreme Court has scheduled its ruling in the state’s case against former President Abdulla Yameen for 1 July at 9am.

The case before the Supreme Court concerns new evidence submitted by the state against Yameen after the High Court overturned his Criminal Court conviction and ordered a retrial. The High Court had nullified a prison sentence handed to Yameen over allegations that he accepted a $1 million bribe in connection with the lease of the island Aarah in Vaavu Atoll and laundered the proceeds. Former Felidhoo constituency MP Yusuf Naeem, who was convicted in the same case, also had his sentence overturned by the High Court, and his case was similarly sent back for retrial.

It was this case that closed the door on Yameen’s ability to contest the last presidential election.

The Supreme Court ruling on 1 July will determine how the matter proceeds from here.
