The Chinese government has officially handed over 880 solar-powered streetlights to the Maldives under a grant aid initiative titled the “China Solar Lights Maldives” project.

At a signing ceremony held on Wednesday, the bilateral transfer agreement was signed by the Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, Dr Abdulla Muththalib, and the Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, Kong Xianhua.

According to the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, the initiative directly aligns with national targets for clean energy transition and sustainable island development.

Officials highlighted that the deployment of solar units across various outer islands will improve municipal street lighting infrastructure while reducing reliance on diesel generators, bolstering the country’s shift towards environmentally friendly renewable energy.
