MALÉ, Maldives — Dr. Mohammed Nazmul Islam, Bangladesh’s newly appointed high commissioner to the Maldives, formally presented his credentials on Sunday to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, in a ceremony that underscored the two nations’ deepening partnership amid shared interests in trade, migration and regional security.

The High Commissioner was escorted from Republic Square to the President’s Office in a traditional cultural procession, Haiykolhu, accompanied by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Drum and Trumpet Band.

Following the presentation of credentials, the President and the High Commissioner reflected on the longstanding bonds of friendship between the Maldives and Bangladesh. They emphasised the deep-rooted people-to-people connections and the history of mutual support and cooperation shared by the two nations. Discussions also centred on enhancing collaboration in key areas such as agriculture, economic development, higher education, and trade and investment.

Mr. Islam, expressed gratitude for the Maldives’ employment of thousands of Bangladeshi migrant workers, who send vital remittances home while fueling the island nation’s tourism-driven economy.  Both sides affirmed their commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations for mutual benefit.

Mr. Islam also relayed warm greetings from Bangladesh’s chief adviser, Prof. Muhammad Yunus and extended an invitation for President Muizzu to visit Dhaka.

Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Bangladesh were established on 22 September 1978.

A political scientist and veteran diplomat, Mr. Islam brings a wealth of experience to the role. Before his Maldives posting, he advised the Turkish Grand National Assembly and lectured at the U.S. Foreign Service Institute. As an associate professor at Ankara Yildirim Beyazit University, he specialized in non-Western international relations and soft power strategies, areas that could infuse fresh momentum into the Bangladesh-Maldives dialogue.
