The country’s largest financial institution, Bank of Maldives (BML), has earned a place on the prestigious “World’s Top Performing Banks 2026” list compiled by Forbes in partnership with market research firm Statista.
BML secured its spot among 500 banks selected from 89 countries in the inaugural edition of the global ranking. BML described the inclusion as a major milestone for the Maldivian banking sector, marking a historic achievement as a national financial institution steps onto the international stage alongside well-known global banks.
The “World’s Top Performing Banks 2026” ranking evaluated institutions across four key financial and operational pillars: profitability, growth and revenue quality, capital and funding strength, and asset quality and efficiency. The evaluation relied on financial data from trusted global providers, including S&P Capital IQ.
BML was categorized under Tier 6, which covers banks holding total assets between MVR 46.2 billion ($3 billion) and MVR 154 billion ($10 billion). Within this tier, BML was assessed directly against peer institutions of similar asset size across the globe.
Commenting on the accomplishment, BML Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Mohamed Shareef said the international recognition reflects the reality consistently shown in the bank’s financial results—that BML remains a strong, well-capitalized institution built on robust governance.
Shareef added that as the national bank, BML remains committed to fulfilling its responsibility to the Maldivian economy, reinforcing its foundation, investing in staff and technology, and driving progress for local businesses and communities.
