Captain Hussain Shafeeq has been appointed as the Managing Director of Maldives Ports Limited. The Privatisation and Corporatisation Board announced the decision on social media, confirming that he will serve as board member, chief executive and managing director.
Shafeeq is a master mariner with more than 35 years of experience in marine transport management. He was the first Maldivian captain of the country’s largest dredger, the Mahajarrafa, and has worked as a senior captain across fleets for many years. His career includes extensive service on bulk carriers, general cargo vessels and heavy lift ships.
He holds a Master Mariner Certificate of Competency from Sri Lanka and an Advanced Diploma in Maritime Science. He has also trained in specialist maritime operations and has long experience in crew training and vessel safety.
Shafeeq’s appointment follows the resignation of former MPL Managing Director Mohammed Rishwan, who stepped down earlier this month. Rishwan was appointed in February last year and was the second MPL chief under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, taking office after the dismissal of former MD Mohammed Wajeeh Ibrahim.
The government has recently replaced several CEOs of state owned companies as part of its administrative reforms following the local council elections.
