MALÉ — Former Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Fayyaz Ismail, has called on the administration to engage in dialogue with all political parties, warning that urgent cooperation is required to rescue the country from a critical economic downturn and protect its national sovereignty.
Speaking at an MDP press briefing yesterday, Fayyaz noted that the party had repeatedly cautioned the public during the 2023 presidential and 2024 parliamentary election campaigns about the severe economic trajectory the nation was heading toward. He acknowledged that while conveying those warnings to the public was challenging at the time, the reality of the situation has now become clear to the entire country.
To prevent further deterioration, Fayyaz proposed the establishment of a “National Unity Committee” to tackle the crisis collectively. He stressed that this initiative is not an attempt to join the government, but rather a focused effort to find viable solutions to the massive challenges facing the nation.
“Every Maldivian now realises that what we were saying was right. The incompetence of this administration and the reality of how things stand are now very clear,” he stated.
Furthermore, Fayyaz highlighted the urgent need for structural changes to the Maldivian governance system, arguing that executive powers should be curtailed while strengthening the independence of state institutions. He underscored the need to establish strict regulatory boundaries to prevent a single incompetent leader from devastating the entire country.
Concluding his remarks, Fayyaz noted that mechanisms must be found to mitigate the long-term damage inflicted by leadership over a five-year term, adding that the public has endured profound hardships as a result of incapable governance.
