Land Handed Over for Maldives’ Largest Mosque to Mark 900 Years of Islam

MALE’ — The Housing Development Corporation has handed over land in Hulhumale to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs for the country’s largest mosque, as the Maldives prepares to mark 900 years since embracing Islam.

The plot was transferred on Tuesday. Islamic Affairs Minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed signed on behalf of the ministry, and HDC Managing Director Ali Zuhair signed for the corporation.

President Muizzu announced the project in his policy address. Construction is planned to begin in September, timed to coincide with the 900th anniversary celebrations. The complex will include the mosque itself, a Quran museum, and other facilities, according to the ministry.

No contractor, cost estimate or completion timeline was announced.
