Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will undertake an official State Visit to the Maldives from September 14 to 15 at the invitation of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
The upcoming visit marks Prime Minister Anwar’s maiden trip to the Maldives since assuming office in November 2022. The formal invitation was extended by President Muizzu during his Official Visit to Malaysia in April 2025.
During the two-day visit, Prime Minister Anwar will meet with President Muizzu at the President’s Office for official bilateral talks. Discussions will focus on strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation and exploring new avenues for partnership between the two nations. Both leaders are also scheduled to witness the exchange of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) on select bilateral issues.
Several top government officials will pay courtesy calls on the Malaysian Prime Minister during his stay in Malé. Among them are Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, Speaker of the People’s Majlis Abdul Raheem Abdulla, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Iruthisham Adam.
The high-level visit highlights 58 years of formal diplomatic ties between the Maldives and Malaysia, built on long-standing development ties and strong people-to-people connections.
The state visit also marks a period of smooth diplomatic alignment following past commercial friction between the two countries. The relationship previously faced strains over an arbitration case involving Malaysian firm WZR Property Sdn Bhd, which pursued legal action claiming unpaid fees exceeding MVR 462 million (USD 30 million) for the halted 25-storey Finance Ministry building project in Hulhumalé Phase 2. Bilateral engagement has since stabilized, with both governments actively expanding economic and developmental ties.
