Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has inaugurated dredging and port‑construction work for the planned canning factory in GDh. Fiyoari, marking a major step in one of the Maldives’ largest fisheries‑sector projects.
The ceremony was attended by Fisheries and Marine Resources Minister Ahmed Shiyam, Housing and Infrastructure Minister Dr. Abdullah Muthalib and Faresmathoda MP Ashraf Rasheed.
The project calls for dredging 6.5 hectares of land to support the development of the new facility. San Pvt Ltd has been awarded the contract for the first phase, which includes land reclamation and port development. Officials expect this stage to be completed within 420 days.
The new complex will replace the existing 1,500‑metric‑tonne cold‑storage unit with a 3,000‑metric‑tonne facility. Plans also include a fishmeal plant capable of processing 100 tonnes per day. An EPC contract for the broader project was signed with a Chinese company in April last year.
Once completed, the factory is expected to process up to 81,000 tonnes of fish annually. The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources said the initiative will strengthen national self‑reliance in fish processing and value‑added fish products.
Officials described the project as a transformative investment for fishing families in Fiyoari and across Huvadhu Atoll. The ministry said the development will support economic growth, create new employment opportunities and expand regional industry.
