The Maldives Correctional Service has rejected claims that an inmate who died on Monday was tortured while serving his sentence at Hulhumale’ facility. The agency issued the statement after reports circulated on social media alleging abuse.

Officials said the inmate, 45‑year‑old Hassan Niaz of S. Hithadhoo, suffered a sudden medical emergency on Monday afternoon. He was taken to Hulhumale’ Hospital at 1:30 p.m. and pronounced dead at 2:05 p.m.

Niaz had been sentenced last week to 25 years in prison for trafficking diamorphine. After his death, images and posts online claimed he had injuries to his neck and chest.

Corrections officials said the service does not torture prisoners and that the allegations are being taken seriously. They noted that all deaths in custody trigger immediate notifications to the police, the inmate’s family, the Inspector of Correctional Services, the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives and the Integrity Commission.

The agency said the relevant authorities will investigate the claims as part of standard procedure.
