President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the Maldives will officially join South Africa’s lawsuit against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), seeking to invoke the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in relation to Gaza.

In a statement, President Muizzu emphasized the Maldives’ commitment to holding Israel accountable for its actions, underscoring the necessity of upholding the rule of law. He called for an immediate cessation of what he described as genocidal practices against the Palestinian people, further urging for a swift end to violence in Gaza.

“The Maldives will always stand with humanity, peace, and justice,” Muizzu said, reaffirming the country’s solidarity with the Palestinian people. He reiterated his call for the recognition of Palestine as a sovereign state, based on pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital—a longstanding position in Maldives foreign policy that he underscored at the UN General Assembly during his recent visit to New York. This move comes as part of the Maldives’ broader commitment to international human rights, further strengthening its position in the global discourse on justice for Palestinians.
