Maldives Opens Door to Fish Exports to Turkey as Trade Deal Takes Effect

MALE’ — The Maldives has secured direct access for its seafood products into Turkey’s vast consumer market following the official implementation of a preferential trade agreement between the two nations, the Maldivian trade minister said on Saturday.

Mohamed Saeed, Minister of Economic Development and Trade, announced the development on social media platform X shortly after the Maldives–Türkiye Preferential Trade Agreement (MTPTA) came into force on 1 August.

Describing the milestone as a turning point in bilateral economic relations, Saeed said the pact builds directly on the strategic vision shared by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Under the terms of the agreement, preferential tariff concessions will be granted across 75 tariff lines. The lower customs duties are expected to provide Maldivian fisheries with expanded access to Turkey’s market of over 85 million consumers, while simultaneously simplifying the import of essential Turkish commodities and goods for Maldivian enterprises.

Saeed expressed confidence that this new chapter would foster deeper commercial cooperation, drive sustainable economic growth, and deliver shared prosperity for both nations.
