The Maldives was a big winner at this year’s World Travel Awards, taking home top prizes in four categories for the Indian Ocean region.
The Maldives received the honors of Indian Ocean’s Leading Destination, Indian Ocean’s Leading Honeymoon Destination, Indian Ocean’s Leading Green Destination and Indian Ocean’s Leading Dive Destination at the awards ceremony held during the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai.
Established in 1993, the World Travel Awards are among the most prestigious accolades in the global travel and tourism industry. The awards aim to recognize exceptional achievement and standards across all sectors of the travel world.
For the Maldives, a nation of more than 1,000 coral islands scattered across the Indian Ocean, the awards reaffirm its status as a world-class luxury destination and environmental steward. The country has actively promoted sustainable tourism development and marine conservation efforts.
“Congratulations to Maldives for championing the Indian Ocean’s Leading Destination crown for the 5th consecutive year! It’s an honor to accept this prestigious award” said Ibrahim Faisal, Minister of Tourism, in a post on X.
The minister has thanked “everyone who has contributed to this incredible achievement.”
Tourism is the backbone of the Maldives economy, generating over 60% of the country’s GDP and jobs for a quarter of the population.
