Dr. Ahmed Jamsheed Mohamed, a seasoned public health expert from the Maldives, has officially assumed the role of WHO Representative in Bangladesh as of November 1, 2024. Dr. Jamsheed brings over 18 years of experience to his new post, having held leadership roles across South Asia, including prior service as Deputy WHO Representative in Bangladesh and WHO Representative to North Korea.
Hailing from Fuvahmulah in the Maldives, Dr. Jamsheed’s career spans decades of public health leadership and policy work. His tenure as Health Minister of the Maldives (2012-2013) under President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik marked a significant phase in the nation’s health sector, during which he championed public health literacy and primary care. Before his WHO service, he was the CEO of ADK Hospital and Director General of the Maldives’ Center for Disease Control, further underscoring his commitment to advancing health access and legislative reforms in his home country.
Joining WHO’s South-East Asia Regional Office in 2013, Dr. Jamsheed led regional efforts against neglected tropical diseases, contributing to the elimination of several diseases across multiple countries. His experience includes a temporary posting in 2019 as Acting WHO Representative to North Korea, where he is already well-regarded for his familiarity with the country’s public health dynamics.
Beyond his official capacities, Dr. Jamsheed is known for his advocacy of community-based public health and his dedication to universal health coverage. Holding a medical degree from India’s Indira Gandhi Medical College and a Master’s in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Dr. Jamsheed is a recognized voice for strengthening primary care across South Asia.
