The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) launched a dedicated website for its “Bodu Badhalu” (Grand Change) initiative, aiming to engage the public and provide information on sweeping structural changes proposed for the country’s governance and constitution.
The launch of the initiative coincides with the 18th anniversary of the adoption of the Maldives’ modern democratic constitution.
The platform was officially unveiled by MDP Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed, marking a significant step in the party’s broader campaign to overhaul the nation’s political framework.
Underpinning the effort, former MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail emphasized that 18 years of experience under the current 2008 Constitution demonstrate an urgent need to reform how the Maldives is governed. He highlighted that the excessive concentration of authority within the executive branch has progressively reduced the People’s Majlis to a puppet institution controlled by government influence.
Furthermore, Fayyaz pointed to systemic political interference that has compromised the judiciary, stressing that immediate intervention is required to restore judicial integrity. The MDP’s “Bodu Badhalu” proposal, he explained, aims to establish a genuine separation of powers and ensure absolute power rests with the public.
The newly launched website serves as an interactive portal where citizens are encouraged to submit critiques, feedback, and recommendations on the proposed constitutional reforms. The MDP urged widespread public participation through the digital platform to help shape the future of Maldivian governance.
