MALÉ — Economic Development and Trade Minister Mohamed Saeed has strongly dismissed opposition claims regarding surging living costs and inflation, accusing the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) of orchestrating politically motivated campaigns ahead of planned street demonstrations.
The minister’s remarks follow an announcement by MDP Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed that the opposition party will hold large-scale protests on August 12 to challenge the government over rising prices and economic pressures.
In a video statement released on social media, Saeed argued that August traditionally marks a period of manufactured political agitation by the opposition. Rejecting claims that basic commodities and fuel have reached unaffordable levels, he compared domestic prices with international markets, noting that global supply chain pressures—exacerbated by Middle Eastern conflicts—have driven fuel costs far higher abroad.
According to the minister, a litre of petrol in the Maldives retails at 16.01 Rufiyaa, compared to 40.09 Rufiyaa in Singapore and 18.08 Rufiyaa in India, while prices in Dubai stand at 14.07 Rufiyaa. He also countered specific opposition claims regarding essential goods such as powdered milk and beef, stating that market rates remain stable and reflective of quality and import origins, with popular brands available at standard distributor prices.
Saeed defended the administration’s broader economic record, asserting that the government is actively stabilising the economy, servicing heavy national debts left by previous administrations, and cleaning up structural imbalances—including the legacy of past currency printing—while expanding revenue streams through bunkering services, township developments, and residency visa frameworks.
Accusing the MDP of attempting to mislead the public for political gain, the minister maintained that the administration’s reform agenda and efforts to attract foreign investment continue to progress despite persistent opposition criticism.
