Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) processed 38,836 containers in the first eight days of March, according to newly released operational statistics from the state‑owned company. The figure covers both 20‑foot and 40‑foot units, with the busiest day recorded on 3 March, when 6,544 containers moved through Malé Commercial Harbour.

Much of the cargo consisted of basic food commodities, a reflection of the country’s heavy reliance on imported staples. Eggs, onions and garlic topped last week’s clearance lists, with eggs alone accounting for 26,536 cases. Other high‑volume perishables included carrots, bananas, pineapples and tomatoes, underscoring the steady flow of essential produce into the capital.

MPL said container‑clearance volumes have been rising steadily, and the company continues to implement measures to accelerate port operations. Clearance times have fallen significantly compared with the previous year, part of a broader effort to ease congestion and improve efficiency at the country’s main commercial gateway.

A large share of the fresh produce arriving in Malé originates from India, the Maldives’ largest trading partner for food imports. Bilateral trade between the two countries has expanded sharply in recent years, rising from USD 223 million in 2017–18 to USD 680 million in 2024–25, reflecting deepening economic ties and sustained dependence on Indian agricultural goods. According to UN COMTRADE data, India’s exports to the Maldives reached USD 825 million in 2024, with vegetables, fruits and eggs forming a consistent portion of the import basket.

As MPL continues to streamline its operations, the port remains a critical artery for the country’s food security — and a barometer of the Maldives’ broader trade relationship with its closest neighbour.
