MALE’, Maldives — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi planted a mango tree in Sultan Park on Friday, joining the Maldives’ Five Million Trees Programme during his two-day state visit.

The initiative, launched by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu at COP28, targets planting five million trees over five years to restore endangered species and promote sustainability, with 6.3 million trees pledged and 500,000 already planted. In a symbolic ceremony, President Muizzu planted a sea putat tree under India’s “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign, while PM Modi’s gesture underscored shared environmental goals. The event, part of broader bilateral engagements, highlighted the deepening partnership between India and the Maldives, marked by mutual commitments to climate action and regional cooperation.
