The People’s National Congress (PNC) Women’s Wing has issued a statement marking International Women’s Day, praising President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s administration for its efforts to empower women across political, economic and social spheres.

The statement highlighted the government’s introduction of special loan schemes aimed at supporting women entrepreneurs. According to the party, these initiatives have enabled many women to enter business and become financially independent.

The PNC also welcomed the government’s steps to strengthen the management of Women’s Development Committees (WDCs). It noted that the position of chairperson is now directly elected by the public and praised the decision to elevate their status, including granting members a Ramadan allowance equal to that received by other officials. The statement further noted that under President Muizzu, the budget share allocated to WDCs has been increased.

The party said women now hold a greater number of senior decision‑making roles in government ministries and state‑owned companies, reflecting the administration’s commitment to recognising women’s potential and expanding their participation at the national level.

In the political sphere, the PNC noted that it has the highest number of women candidates contesting the upcoming local council elections. The Women’s Wing said this reflects the party’s efforts to broaden women’s roles in politics.

The PNC Women’s Wing announced that special activities to mark this year’s International Women’s Day will be held after the month of Ramadan.
