MALE’, MALDIVES — President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu welcomed Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka to the Maldives on Sunday with praise for the “enduring friendship” between their two nations, as the countries mark six decades of diplomatic relations.

Speaking at a state banquet in honour of the Sri Lankan leader’s first state visit to the Maldives, President Muizzu described the relationship as “more than just neighbours” but rather “a bond defined by trust, mutual respect, and enduring friendship.”

“For generations, Maldivians have looked to Sri Lanka not only as a partner, but as a second home,” President Muizzu told distinguished guests and members of the Sri Lankan delegation. “The kindness, hospitality, and generosity of the Sri Lankan people leave a lasting impression on our people.”

Both leaders having held “meaningful and productive discussions” earlier in the day on bilateral and multilateral issues, according to President Muizzu.

The relationship between the Indian Ocean neighbours has evolved significantly since establishing diplomatic ties in 1965, moving beyond traditional cooperation in education and health to encompass tourism, digital technology, security collaboration, and cultural exchange.

“Our collaborative efforts span across economic and social domains, reflecting not only the dynamism of our bilateral ties but also our shared ambition to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world,” President Muizzu said.

The President’s remarks highlighted the deep historical connections between the two island nations, even referencing their early trade relations involving dried fish. The speech was peppered with poetic imagery, with President Muizzu expressing hope that the bonds between their nations “continue to flourish like the coconut palms on our islands — rooted, resilient, and always reaching skyward.”

President Muizzu reaffirmed his government’s commitment to working “side-by-side with Sri Lanka in pursuit of our shared aspirations — to uplift lives, to strengthen peace and progress, and to foster a future built on solidarity and shared vision.”

The state banquet concluded with President Muizzu extending his “heartfelt wishes” for President Disanayaka’s continued good health and for “lasting peace, prosperity, and wellbeing of the people of Sri Lanka.”
