President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has established a new State-Owned Enterprise, Maldives Awqaf Investments Limited, aimed at generating sustainable funding for religious affairs and infrastructure across the country.

The President announced the decision on Sunday night while addressing the official ceremony at Hulhumalé Central Park to mark 900 Hijri years since the Maldives embraced Islam.

The new company was created under Presidential Decree No. 14/2026, using powers granted under Section 15 of the Companies Act. It is tasked with building, refurbishing, and maintaining mosques nationwide, upgrading essential facility services, and running Sharia-compliant business operations to back religious initiatives. The Administration noted that the enterprise will help expand financial resources toward the goal of making the Maldives a developed nation by 2040.

Addressing the gathering, President Muizzu stated that Islam remains the core of Maldivian sovereignty and independence, declaring that the country’s ultimate safeguard lies in staying a 100 per cent Islamic nation.

“The values of protection and preservation that Islam brings to individual, social, and national life are fundamental principles we must pass down to future generations,” the President said, noting that Islamic guidance originally cleared away inequality and established that all citizens are equal before Almighty Allah.

He warned against the spread of narcotics and intoxicating substances, calling them a destructive scourge to families and local communities. Adherence to Islamic principles, he said, is critical to building a productive generation and keeping the country safe from social ills.

Reflecting on history, President Muizzu pointed to the struggle of Utheemu Bodu Thakurufaanu against Portuguese rule, reminding the crowd that past generations saved the country because they stood firm in their faith and refused to compromise their religion.

During the ceremony, the President unveiled the official logo and slogan for the year-long commemoration of the 900th anniversary.

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef, Speaker of the People’s Majlis Abdul Raheem Abdulla, Cabinet Ministers, and members of the People’s Majlis attended the event.
