President Muizzu Meets with China’s Wang Yi on UN Sidelines, Touts Strong Bilateral Ties

NEW YORK — On the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu held a key meeting with China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, marking a reaffirmation of ties between the two nations.

During the Monday meeting, Dr. Muizzu emphasized the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening its relationship with China. He highlighted ongoing agreements and praised Beijing’s support in boosting the Maldives’ tourism sector, a critical pillar of the island nation’s economy.

Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, assured China’s continued backing. Both leaders recognized the need for sustained cooperation on pressing global challenges, particularly the existential threat of climate change.

President Muizzu is attending the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly at the UN Headquarters in New York, where he is set to engage in a series of high-level discussions.
